Press statement from Serve the People: It is Insane to Give Obama the Nobel Peace Prize

Henrik Ormåsen, spokesperson for Serve the People, says, - The U.S. president is the last person on earth to deserve such a peace prize.

Ormåsen and Serve the People further accused the Norwegian Nobel Peace Prize committee of being infected by the Obamania that spread in Europe during the American 2008 electoral campaign.

- This award is just part of the ripple effect of that Obamania, Ormåsen said.

No state in the world has started as many wars or contributed to as many bloody coups as the U.S. There is a straight line running from the US war with Spain over the control of the Philippines more than a hundred years ago, through the Korean and Vietnam Wars, on to today’s occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan.

- It is pure insanity to award a «Peace Prize» to the leader of the largest war power in the world, Ormåsen states.

The spokesperson speculates about the Nobel committee really just wants to get this American political superstar to Norway in order to share in the publicity and spotlight.

- This is probably all about prestige and the fact that the Nobel committee wants to show off around a truly grandiose visit. This can’t possibly reflect some serious evaluation of the role Obama and the U.S. play in today’s world, Ormåsen added.

Serve the People brands the USA as an imperialist power which intrigues and intervens in other countries with both military and political means, all to serve its own interests.

- Obama does not represent any break with U.S. imperialism, Ormåsen says. – On the contrary!

During his electoral campaign and every since, Obama has pledged to step up the war in Afghanistan. He wants more American soldiers and bombers in poor countries, not less.

Henrik Ormåsen concluded by saying, – Obama is a small part of a huge war machine, and we encourage the Norwegian people to turn Oslo upside down if he tries to put his feet on Norwegian soil.
