In the last few days, there have been historically massive uprisings in Chile. In Santiago, the entire metro system has been closed in protests that have been directed against higher prices for public transportation, among other grievances.
NRK wrote two articles on Saturday.
The first article describes the following:
Earlier this week, the government decided that ticket prices would be increased by 4% during rush hours, and cited higher energy costs and a weaker peso.
This led to great protests, primarily by students and other young demonstrators, reports news agency AP.
After a week of demonstrations, a peak was reached Friday evening when several metro stations were vandalized while people jumped over the turnstiles.
NRK reports that all traffic has been stopped and that the protests have spread throughout Santiago over the course of the night. Barricades have been erected and fires started at the entrances of metro stations. Police vehicles have been attacked with stones, a bus was set aflame, and windows were smashed. And the headquarters of the energy company ELNE were engulfed in enormous flames.
In the last few days, we have seen enormous uprisings in Ecuador and now the kindling has been sparked in Chile as well. The general crisis in capitalism robs people of their welfare, and the masses answer with a terrific anger. This terrific anger is shown in images and videos in NRK’s article.
The bourgeoisie does not answer with welfare, but rather with repression. In the first article, we can read that demonstrators risk 3-5 years for their justified rebellion against the bourgeoisie.
On Saturday night, NRK wrote that a curfew was imposed in Chile. And for the first time since the end of the fascist military Pinochet regime, soldiers were sent out into the streets after a state of emergency was declared.
The masses nonetheless show enormous courage in their confrontation with capitalism and imperialism, despite repression and increased fascism. In Chile, there have also been demonstrations against Norwegian imperialism in the past few years.
