The Prime Minister has gotten the queen to suspend Parliament in the UK. The stated goal is to force through the resignation from the EU without the intervention of bothersome parliament politicians.
NRK’s commentator writes on the case:
To suspend Parliament is a political countermove from the government that is manifestly totalitarian and undemocratic, even if it is strictly speaking legal.
The European election system allows for this. Bourgeois democracy was never meant to be a system where one vote is equal to one vote. The bourgeois states’ organs of power have always been a complex system of institutions that are meant to “balance” each other.
In England, one has the Upper and Lower Houses, the government and the monarchy, and the Courts. These are all arranged together such that the British ruling class will not lose too much playing room to the dangerous democracy. At its inception, it was a compromise between the nobility and the growing bourgeoisie.
Tjen Folket Media has earlier written about the reactionary vice grips that are being tightened around the bourgeois parliamentary democracy. Parliamentarianism must be undermined to make room for more corporativism. In order to rule, the ruling class must undermine its own leading organs that are in a deep crisis today.
Election campaigns are ongoing today, but the suspension of Parliament in the UK shows that how people vote means very little in the bigger picture. Even within the system’s own framework, votes and elections can be put to the side. The bourgeois state apparatus is built for and by the bourgeoisie, and against the masses.
A number of social democrats believe that such incidents are only possible under despotism and that the masses of people would never allow something like this to happen. But modern history is full of these kinds of tricks. And on a number of occasions, presidents have dissolved Parliament, even in violation of the law, the way that Fujimori did in Peru in the 1990s. Social democrats attempt to sell the idea that people “would never accept it”, but the rulers have an enormous propaganda apparatus for selling their decisions and spreading fear about what would happen without a “strong hand”. Of course many will protest, but history shows that it is a very possible measure – even in relatively peaceful times.
There is a lesson to be learned here, for those who wish to learn.
