Mapuche: Public Statement of Mapuche Political Prisoners of Angol Prison

The following statement has been sent to us by the Chilean revolutionary newspaper El Pueblo. We publish it below in both English and Spanish.

We address to our Mapuche nation people, the national and international community, social organizations, students, workers and to all those who identify with our fair territorial and political demands.

And we point out through this statement that today -May 4, 2020- we have taken the decision to begin a liquid hunger strike to demand the following from the State of Chile:

KIÑE¹: The freedom of Mapuche political prisoners or the change to an alternative measure other than prison, as stipulated in ILO (International Labour Organization) Convention No. 169, Articles 8, 9 and 10 and considering also the Declaration of the United Nations on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

We deem this measure to be necessary as a prevention of the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic for humanitarian reasons. In which the government has not made a pronouncement to safeguard the lives of Mapuche political prisoners or political prisoners in general.

EPܲ: We reject the type of judgment and the way in which the State of Chile applies the law when it comes to political persecution, imprisonment and sentencing of Mapuche people in comparison how it’s applied to State agents.

KÜLA³: We demand that the State of Chile return the ancestral territory, giving priority to the different of⁴ in resistance. We also demand that the forestry companies abandon the wallmapu, since they are one of the responsible for the imbalance of our itrofilmongen (depletion of water resources and disappearance of biodiversity) as well as the energy, fishing, mining and highways. And in this same way, we demand the demilitarization of our territory, since they only protect the economic interests of transnational companies

MELI⁵: We make a broad call to the lof in resistance, social organizations and the different expressions of struggle to demonstrate in support of our mobilization, leaving them freedom of action.

MAPUCHE: COMUNICADO PÚBLICO PRESOS POLÍTICOS MAPUCHE CÁRCEL DE ANGOL

04 de Mayo de 2020.

Nos dirigimos a nuestro pueblo nación mapuche, a la comunidad nacional e internacional, organizaciones sociales, estudiantiles, trabajadores y a todos quienes se identifiquen con nuestras justas demandas territoriales y políticas.

Y señalamos a través de este comunicado, que hoy 04 de mayo del 2020 hemos tomado la decisión de iniciar una huelga de hambre líquida para exigir el Estado de Chile lo siguiente:

KIÑE⁹: La libertad de los prisioneros políticos mapuche o el cambio por una medida alternativa distinta a la prisión, como lo estipula el Convenio de la OIT n° 169, artículos 8, 9 y 10 y considerando también la Declaración de las Naciones Unidas sobre los Derechos de los Pueblos Indígenas.

Estimamos necesaria esta medida como prevención al contagio por la pandemia COVID-19 en atención a razones humanitarias. Donde el gobierno no ha hecho un pronunciamiento para salvaguardar la vida de los presos políticos mapuche ni de los presos políticos en general.

EPܹ⁰: Rechazamos el tipo de criterio y la forma en que el Estado de Chile aplica la ley cuando se trata de persecución política, encarcelamiento y condena de personas mapuche versus agentes del Estado.

KÜLA¹¹: Exigimos al Estado de Chile la devolución del territorio ancestral priorizando a los diferentes lof¹² en resistencia. También exigimos a las empresas forestales hacer abandono del wallmapu ya que éstos son uno de los responsables del desequilibrio de nuestro itrofilmongen (agotamiento del recurso hídrico y la desaparición de la biodiversidad) como también lo son las centrales energéticas, pesqueras, mineras, carreteras. Y de esta misma forma, exigimos desmilitarizar nuestro territorio, ya que sólo protegen los intereses económicos de las empresas transnacionales

MELI¹³: Hacemos un amplio llamado a los lof en resistencia, organizaciones sociales y a las distintas expresiones de lucha a manifestarse en apoyo a nuestra movilización dejando para ello en libertad de acción.

1. Kiñe means number “one” in mapudungun, the language of Mapuche people.
2. Epü means number “two” in mapudungun, the language of Mapuche people.
3. Küla means number “three” in mapudungun, the language of Mapuche people.
4. Lof it means a certain territorial space where a group of families live together (Mapudungun).
5. Meli means number “four” in mapudungun, the language of Mapuche people.
6. Amulepe tain weichan means “let our fight continue”.
7. Marrichiwew means “ten times we will win”.
8. Wallmapu is the mapudungun name for the ancestral territory of the Mapuche people and nation, also meaning as «the whole Mapuche territory»
9. Kiñe significa uno en mapudungun, el lenguaje del pueblo mapuche.
10. Epü significa dos en mapudungun.
11. Küla significa tres en mapudungun.
12. Lof, del mapudungun, significa cierto espacio territorial donde un grupo de familias viven reunidas.
13. Meli significa cuatro en mapudungun.
